Explore a piece of history
Stellenbosch dates to 1697 and is the oldest town in South Africa, when an island in the Eerste River was named Stellenbosch by the then Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Soon thereafter the first farming activities in the area were started and today the area is primarily known for its extraordinary wines, fruit, jaw-dropping landscapes, and exceptional scenic quality. The towns of Stellenbosch and neighboring Franschhoek are renowned for various architectural styles such as Georgian, Dutch, and Victorian, which reflect their traditions and rich heritage.
Stellenbosch is situated about 50 km from Cape Town and is easily accessible from the Cape Town airport.

A University with a unique story
The wine was made in the Wegevallen cellar of the Department of Viticulture and Oenology (DVO), Stellenbosch University. In 1924, professor Abraham Izak Perold cross bred Pinot Noir and Hermitage to create the Pinotage cultivar. The first experimental Pinotage wines were made soon afterwards, under the supervision of the DVO, which continues to provide world class training and cutting edge research for the South African and global industry with its Welgevallen vineyards and cellar.
